What is Pimple or Acne?
Pimples or acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition of the pilosebaceous unit which usually is self-limiting, very common in adolescents but can trouble a person of any age. It occurs when the production of oil (sebum) from the skin increases at puberty, the outbreak results from blockages in the opening of the hair follicle.  Pimple can affect both male and female of any age with its prevalence as per the studies is 43% in males and 51% in females in an age group of 20-29 years, 20 and 35% in an age group of 30-39 years, 12 and 26% in an age group of 40-49 years and 7 and 15% in a people aged 50 or older in males and females respectively.

Among all the skin types, people with oily skin type are more prone to develop acne. Basically, there are four different types of acne or pimples namely, blackheads or open comedones, whiteheads or closed comedones, papules, pustules and nodules and are seen on sebaceous-gland rich areas of the body, mainly face, chest, shoulders, back and upper arms. There are multiple factors that contribute to etiopathogenesis and affect its severity including androgen activity, sebaceous hyperplasia, altered cornification and differentiation of keratinocytes (skin cells) and inflammatory response. Additionally, factors such as hot and humid weather, diet, stress and use of comedogenic cosmetic products. The problem of acne arises when the production of oil from the skin increases, due to the accumulation of oil in the skin cells, the bacteria (p. acne) present in the hair follicles also clog the pores, which results in infection and acne. Let's understand in this blog how to remove the pimples and dark spots that you have over your face and the body.

Things to avoid in pimples:

You should not do any such thing which makes your skin more oily. Such as -

1. You should avoid applying hair oil in scalp as it may increase the greasiness and oiliness of the face that may contribute to development of new acne lesions.

2. Avoid touching the face and popping up the acne as it may leave behind not only dark spots but also deep acne scars upon healing. Popping up the acne or pimple can also cause new acne lesions to develop due to its infective nature.

3. People who wear makeup should use products labeled "non-comedogenic" so that the product does not block your pores. It is very important to remove makeup before sleeping.

4. You should also avoid using any cosmetic products purchased over the counter as some of its ingredients can make your skin oily and eventually development of new acne lesions.

5. Wash your face 3-4 times daily with a soap such as Dove or Pears or a mild face wash. This helps you take away the oil that has been produced and present over the skin.
Pimple treatment:
If you are troubled by pimples and seeking a permanent solution to remove the pimples and dark spots that you have then you should consult a skin specialist doctor. Dermatologists are specialized not only in treating the pimples or acne properly but can also provide you with the valuable advice on do's and don't in acne. You should avoid trying any home remedies and should not apply any cream on your own available over the counter to treat your pimples as it can cause redness, itching, burning sensation on your skin but, should definitely look for a doctor who can prescribe you a cream that can help you remove your pimples.
A dermatologist can tell you and decide about the pimple treatment based on the following factors:
1- Type of acne

2- Areas affected

3 - How did the pimples appear

4- Have you consulted and taken a treatment for pimples from any other skin specialist or a dermatologist for the same in the past or not?

Topical Medications:

To treat the pimples, your doctor may recommend topical medications in the form of gels, creams, lotions or solutions to apply on your skin. Some of the medications prescribed by your dermatologist include:
1- Benzoyl peroxide (to kill bacteria).

2- Retinoids such as Tretinoin and Adapalene to prevent new acne from appearing.

3- Antibiotics such as Erythromycin and Clindamycin to slow the growth of acne-causing bacteria.

4- Salicylic acid to clear out oil and dead skin cells from whiteheads and blackheads.

Oral Medications:

In case of the more severe cases, the skin specialist doctor may also prescribe oral medications in the form of tablets and capsules that include,

1. Antibiotics such as Azithromycin, Levofloxacin, Erythromycin, Doxycycline and Minocycline.

2. Retinoids such as Tretinoin and Isotretinoin.

3. Hormonal medicines (for pimples caused by hormonal fluctuations).
Ways to prevent pimples:
You have to take a regular course of oral and topical medicines prescribed by a dermatologist. Based on the severity of acne, the dermatologist advises about how much duration of medicine course is required to treat the pimples.
Alternative treatments for pimples:

Your doctor may also recommend using these therapies to cure acne:

1. Chemical peel - The doctor may recommend a chemical peel to treat the acne or pimple, its spots and scars. In this, chemical agents of different strengths are used to remove the upper layer of your skin, which is why it is called chemical peel treatment.

2. Micro dermabrasion - In this therapy, an electrical machine is used to remove the upper layer of the skin and reduce the pimple spots and scars. This entire process is called dermabrasion.

3. Laser treatment - Treatment is done to remove acne marks. Special laser technology is used in this.

And many such new techniques are used to treat pimples. But these techniques are expensive.
