So, let’s discuss in today’s blog about acne or pimple types.

Acne is a common skin condition that results from blockages in the opening of the hair follicle due to excessive oil production and bacteria growth. It usually appears on the face, chest or back, which causes enlarged pores, inflammation, and redness.

There are several types of acne, each with its own characteristics and severity. Here are some of the common pimple type or pimple types:

Whiteheads (closed comedones): Whitehead or whiteheads are small, flesh-coloured bumps that are closed at the top (closed comedones) with a white or slightly yellowish appearance. They form when the pores are clogged with oil and dead skin cells.

Blackheads (open comedones): Blackhead or blackheads are similar to whiteheads but have an open surface (open comedones). They appear black due to oxidation of the oil and dead skin cells within the pore.

Papules: Papules are small, red, and tender bumps without a visible center of pus. They can be sensitive to touch and often indicate inflammation.

Pustules: Pustules are red, inflamed bumps with a white or yellow center filled with pus. They can be painful and are commonly referred to as pimples.

Nodules: Nodules are larger, solid, and painful lumps that develop deep beneath the surface of the skin. They can be hard to the touch and often require medical treatment.

Cysts: Cysts are large, pus-filled, painful lesions that are deeper under the skin compared to pustules. They often cause severe inflammation and scarring and usually require medical attention for treatment.

Acne can range from mild to severe, and some individuals may experience a combination of these types ranging from just open or closed comedones (blackheads or whiteheads) to papules and pustules to nodules in some cases.

Clinically, depending on the pimple types, its severity and area involved, acne are divided into four different grades (grade 1-4) mild, moderate, severe and very severe. Grade 1 acne involves scattered comedones ( blackheads and whiteheads ) and few papules ( red acne). In grade 2 along with blackheads, whiteheads and papules, few pustules ( pus filled acne) are also involved. Grade 3 and 4 acnes involve nodules and cysts.
